General Information
Sharps waste is regulated by state law and must be disposed of separately from recycling and waste bins. The term "sharps" refers to any item used to puncture or cut body parts.
Examples of sharps waste include:
- needles
- syringes with needles
- IV tubing with needles attached
- lancets
- scalpel blades
Sharps waste should be disposed of in plastic Sharps containers, clearly labeled with a biohazard symbol.
Guidelines for Handling Syringes and Other Sharps
- All sharps should be disposed of via red sharps containers.
- Never put sharps in recycling or waste bins.
- Do not attempt to use the Sharps container if it has reached the "full" line.
- Do not pick up broken glass or other sharp objects with hands.
- Do not recycle or reuse needles or syringes.
- Do not flush used needles or syringes down the toilet.
- Do not use glass containers to dispose of needles or syringes.
Sharps Container Locations
To ensure the safety of all staff, faculty, students, and library users, sharps waste container locations include:
Campus Library
LB1 First Floor: Women's restroom, Men's restroom
LB1 Second Floor: Women's restroom, Men's restroom
LB1 Third Floor: Gender Inclusive restroom (the restroom closest to the stacks)
Note: If the container is two-thirds full (reached the Full line), please alert library staff at the Information Desk on the first floor.
Activities & Recreation Center
Lower Level: lobby, Men's locker room, Women's locker room, All-Gender restroom
First Floor: Men's restroom, Women's restroom, All-Gender restroom
Second Floor: Men's restroom, Women's restroom, All-Gender restroom
Note: if the container is full, please alert staff at the front desk on the first floor or lower level.
