Research Guides

The Campus Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) Classification system to organize and shelve books.

I.  How to read a LC call number and find a book on the shelf

Read a call number by sections, line by line.  For example:

Format in catalog:      Format on book spine:
PE 1478 S65 1991        PE
1478
S65
1991

PE        Read the first line in alphabetical order:  A, B, ... DE, ... P, PA, PE, PF, PG, ... SA

S65      Read the letters in the third line alphabetically and the numbers that follow it as decimals (for instance .65 comes before .8)
                S1478, S613, S62, S65, S659, S67, S8

1991    This is the year the book was published.
