Finding SIC, NAICS and ISIC Codes:

Online Sources

Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual
http://www.osha.gov/oshstats/sicser.html
(Print Source in Library Reference collection on 1st floor.  Call No: HF 1042 A55)
The SIC code system was devised by the Office of Management and Budget as a guideline for reporting business statistics.   Industries are classified in broad two- or three-digit groupings, as well as more specific four-digit codes. Each SIC code represents a type of business.  SIC codes are used extensively in directories, financial services, statistical publications and industry reports to classify industry data. Also, some online databases allow searching by SIC code. To use or search these sources, you will need to determine the SIC code of the company you are researching.

Lexis-Nexis: UW restricted
1) Select:  Business.  2) Select: Directories.  3) From Source drop down menu, select: SIC Directory

North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/naics.html
(Print Source in Library Reference collection on 1st floor. Call No: HF1042 N67)
NAICS was developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide new comparability in statistics about business activity across North America. Shows corresponding NAICS codes for SIC codes and vice versa. However, most electronic databases and reference sources still use SIC codes.  Government sources have begun to use NAICS codes, as well as Hoovers Online and Reference USA.

This is a guide to NAICS, SIC, and ISIC Codes, providing background, comparison, and explanation of how to use them, as well as a conversion source for SIC to NAICS, NAIC to SIC, and ISIC to NAIC.  An overview and structure is given of the ISIC United Nations classification system for comparability of different countries and an explanation that there is comparability at the 2 digit level of ISIC with NAICS.

Explanation of SIC Codes
  • The first 2 digits of the SIC code stand for the main industry group under which the company is classified.
  • The last 2 digits of the SIC code more closely classify the company in its major group

 The 11 main divisions are:

01 to 09    Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing
10 to 14    Mining
15 to 17    Construction
20 to 39    Manufacturing
40 to 49    Transportation, Communiations, Electric, Gas & Sanitary Services

  • 3rd digit = Subsector title
  • 4th digit = Industry group title
  • 5th digit = Industry title
  • 6th digit = US title

The NAICS Sectors are:

11 Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting
21 Mining
22 Utilities
23 Construction
31-33 Manufacturing
42 Wholesale Trade
44-45 Retail Trade

Explanation of ISIC Codes

ISIC provides a framework for an international comparison of national statistics. It has a 4-digit hierarchy:

  • Letter  =  Section Titles

  • Next 2 digits = Division Titles

  • 3rd digit = Group Title

  • 4th digit = Class Title

The ISIC Divisions are:

A   Agriculture

Ratios: (Comparisons)

What They Are

Ratios give a standard for comparing a company's performance. Putting data from the Balance Sheet and Income Statement into ratios or percentages, can provide a better understanding of a company's financial well being. The comparison is made against industry averages or other statements. Two forms of numerical study of financial statements:
Common Size converts each line of a financial statement into percentages of total revenues and each line of the Balance Sheet into percentages of  total assets.
Ratio Analysis compares an item on the financial statement to another item (not to the whole). The idea is to focus on meaningful comparisons such as total debt to total equity on the Balance Sheet to find out how much of the assets are funded by borrowing.
